Kagoshima Shrine is located in Hayato-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and its main deity is Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto. It is believed to provide blessings for matchmaking, safe childbirth, and protection from evil. The shrine grounds are vast, and the cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall attract many visitors. Its architectural style is particularly representative of early modern shrine architecture in southern Kyushu, and it is highly regarded and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The Hatsuuma Festival, held on the Sunday after January 18th of the lunar calendar every year, features the rare custom of Suzukakeuma-odori (horse dancing with bells) and attracts over 100,000 tourists each year.
