Inukai Falls, located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, is an impressive waterfall with a height of 36 meters and a width of 22 meters. The clear stream flowing from the Kirishima mountain range cascades down the rocky cliff, creating a stunning natural spectacle. This site is also famous as a stop on the first honeymoon trip in Japan, taken by Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife Oryo during the late Edo period. In a letter to his sister Otome, Ryoma wrote, “The waterfall falls 50 ken (about 100 meters), and it felt as if I were in another world.” However, the actual height is 36 meters, so he may have exaggerated a bit. The walking trail from the parking lot to the basin is about 300 meters long, with some uneven areas, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. From the observation deck near the basin, you can enjoy a close-up view of the powerful falls. Nearby, you can also explore popular spots like Kirishima Onsen and Kirishima Shrine, making for a fulfilling journey filled with history and nature.
